Welcome to UBC’s FSC Building!
The Forest Sciences Centre Building (FSC), home to UBC’s Faculty of Forestry, is your first stop during this self-guided tour.

The FSC is a great showcase for the technical capabilities of wood structures and the possibilities for large-scale application of wood structures and products. With an internationally-recognized Faculty of Forestry, it was very important for UBC to provide a research and teaching space that represented the modern face of the wood industry and forestry profession. Completed in 1998, the FSC is the hub of the Forestry programs at UBC and home to the departments of Forest Science, Wood Science and Forest Resource Management, as well as the Centre for Advanced Wood Processing. The 17,505-square-metre Forest Sciences complex has 11 classrooms, 2 lecture theatres, teaching laboratories, office space, computer labs, study areas, and a cafeteria.
The principal design goal was to integrate wood construction throughout the facility and to demonstrate and highlight wood use, both structurally and aesthetically. A secondary goal was to help promote local wood-based building products, as one of British Columbia’s most important resources and economic drivers.
The main design goals set out for the Forest Sciences Centre project were:
- Create a signature building that would also serve as a new gateway to the University.
- Unify the Faculty of Forestry in one building that integrates structural, mechanical, and electrical infrastructure into an efficient operational entity.
- Carefully consider energy conservation in all service operations and in the use of recycled and less energy intensive building materials.
- The design should be flexible to meet changes in function or services in the future and for changes unanticipated by today’s technology and user needs.
